
Justice Surya Kant Set To Be New Chief Justice Of India, Succeeding BR Gavai
New Delhi: Around five months after BR Gavai took charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, the Union Government has began the process to appoint his successor in Justice Surya Kant. The current CJI is all set to demit the office next month, reports News Agency ANI.
It is reported that the incumbent chief justice will be requested to recommend his successor by tomorrow. Justice Gavai will serve as the Chief Justice until his retirement on November.

Traditionally, the recommendation letter for the next CJI is sent about a month before the incumbent retires upon reaching the age of 65. Once appointed, Justice Surya Kant, the senior most judge after the CJI, will take charge as the CJI on 24 November and is expected to serve a tenure of nearly 15 months, until 9 February 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Surya Kant graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981. He earned Bachelor’s degree in Law in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and started practicing at the Hisar District Court in 1984 and shifted to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh from October 5, 2018.

In 2019, Justice Surya Kant was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Currently, apart from a senior Supreme Court judge, he is also the Chairman of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee from November 12, 2024. He is also a member of various Committees of Indian Law Institute – a deemed university under the Supreme Court.
