CJI Gavai Recommends Justice Surya Kant As Next Chief Justice Of India
New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, on Monday, officially recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge after him in the top court, as his successor to the Union Government. The incumbent chief justice Gavai’s term is set to end on November 23.
Justice Surya Kant will become the 53rd CJI once the recommendation gets the go-ahead from the Union Law Ministry as it is an established convention that the senior-most judge is elevated to the Chief Justice. The upcoming chief justice is expected to serve till February 9, 2027.
Justice Surya Kant was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, and his tenure at the Supreme Court lasts till February 9, 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Haryana to a middle-class family, Justice Kant graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981, earned a Bachelor’s degree in law in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University at Rohtak, and started practicing law at the Hisar District Court in 1984.

In 1985, Justice Kant shifted his practice to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He held the office of Advocate General of Haryana till his elevation as a permanent Judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. In 2018, he became the Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, and in 2019 to judge in the country’s apex court.
