The nation is celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s 154th birth anniversary on Monday, remembering the values and morals he taught and demonstrated through his life.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, fondly remembered as “Mahatma”, “Gandhiji” or “Bapu”, had played a key role in India”s freedom movement displaying non-violence or ahimsa. On October 2 every year, people mark Gandhi Jayanti and recollects his contributions on various peaceful movements which helped India to attain freedom from a century long British dominance.

October 2 was also declared as the “International Day of Non-Violence” by the United Nations in June 15, 2007. People visit Raj Ghat in Delhi on this special occasion, where a memorial is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. A black marble platform was constructed to mark the spot of his cremation on 31 January 1948, and it is equipped with an eternal flame at one end.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid floral tributes to the father of nation at Raj Ghat in New Delhi on Monday morning.

“I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on the special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. His timeless teachings continue to illuminate our path. Mahatma Gandhi”s impact is global, motivating the entire humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion”, said Mr Modi on Monday.

“May we always work towards fulfilling his dreams. May his thoughts enable every youngster be the agent of change he dreamt of, fostering unity and harmony all over” Mr Modi added on X (formerly Twitter).

“Mahatma Gandhi ji is not just an individual, he is an idea, an ideology and the moral compass of our great nation. His ideals of truth, non-violence, freedom, equality and coexistence have eternal value”, wrote the Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on X (formerly Twitter).

“We bow in reverence to Bapu’s ideals on his Jayanti”, Mr Kharge added sharing a snippet of his visit to Raj Ghat, offering prayers at Gandhiji”s memorial.

“The path of truth, non-violence and harmony, the path to unite India, was shown by Mahatma Gandhi. Hundreds of salutes to Bapu on his birth anniversary”, noted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi while sharing a snippet from his Bharat Jodo Yatra along with the quote “be the change that you wish to see in the world”.

“This Gandhi Jayanti, let us recall that the Mahatma practised complete transparency and openness, lacked any revengeful feelings for his opponents, insisted on shedding bigotry, prejudice and hatred, and never misused religion to inflame people’s passions”, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh remembered Mahatma Gandhi.

“Ishwar Allah Tero Naam, Sabko Sanmati de Bhagwan”. Mahatma Gandhi is relevant today more than ever”, MP and AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal noted on X.

“Today, his [Gandhi”s] core principles of non-violence, freedom and communal harmony are under stress because of a dictatorship at the Centre. Let us vow to be true to Bapu’s learnings and strive for true freedom for every Indian”, he added.

The Royal Swedish Academy behind Nobel Prizes remembered Gandhiji with his famous quote; “There are many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I am prepared to kill for”.

“Remembering Mahatma Gandhi the evening before his 154th birthday. Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on 12 occasions”, they said on X.

“A day of reflection and action towards a more peaceful world”, wrote actor Mahesh Babu on X.
