Odisha: Over 40,000 Women Missing,15 Raped Every Day, Says Rahul Gandhi

According to the Crime in India 2022 report, released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Odisha has the highest number of victims of human trafficking.

Bhubaneswar, Odisha: Speaking at a massive rally at Baramunda Ground in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar, Opposition Leader in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged that more than 40,000 women in Odisha have disappeared. He said it was not known where these women went till date.

“There are atrocities against women here every day. “They are raped. 15 women are raped in Odisha every day… “Your government only sucks your blood round the clock, snatches away your land…” the Congress leader said, launching a fierce attack on the BJP-led Odisha government.

Earlier, there were reports that around 36,000 women are missing between 2020-2024 in the state, according to Kanak News, Odisha’s leading media house.

In March this year, Odisha chief minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, while speaking in the assembly, stated that over 20,000 missing persons cases have been registered in the state during the last nine months, adding that out of which only 7,048 have been traced. He was responding to a query from Congress MLA Sofia Firdous. Approximately 13,000 persons are still on the missing list.

According to the Crime in India 2022 report, released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Odisha has the highest number of victims of human trafficking. Odisha’s border villages, especially Lulkidhi village, have many missing girls, whose families are living in constant fear due to human trafficking concerns.

The Raebareli MP alleged that the government has remained silent despite reports of frequent rapes.

Speaking at the rally, Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the state is being remotely controlled by industrialist Gautam Adani, claiming that the government is allowing big corporates to exploit Odisha’s natural resources at the expense of its people.
