Odisha Sets Up High-Level Committee To Probe KIIT Student Death

Following the death of a Nepali female student at Odisha’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) campus, the state government has constituted a high-level committee to investigate the matter.

Led by the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Home Department, the committee will also include the Principal Secretary of the Women & Child Development Department and the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department as its members.

“In light of the recent unfortunate incident relating to KIIT University, the Government of Odisha has taken immediate cognizance of the matter and taken steps to arrest security guards and suspension of erring officials involved,” stated a press note issued on February 18.

The letter also stated that KIIT has been placed under notice, and based on the findings, appropriate legal action will be taken.

The Odisha government has also taken note of the alleged use of force against the protesting students and hostel inmates by ‘private individuals,’ according to Odisha TV.

A third-year B-Tech student of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), identified as Prakriti Lamsal (20) from Nepal, allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on Sunday evening. Her death triggered an unrest on campus with students protesting at the campus.

Another student, identified as Advik Srivastava, has been taken into custody based on allegations of abetment to suicide.

As calls for justice for the victim grew, KIIT University issued a notice asking all Nepali students, over 500, to vacate the campus. As the incident gained more attention, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that two officers had been dispatched to counsel Nepali students affected in Odisha, the university called the students back.
