NSUI Demands Justice for Nepali Student’s Death at KIIT University

New Delhi, 17 February 2025: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Congress-affiliated student organisation, has strongly condemned the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student at KIIT University, Odisha, and accused the institution of neglecting her harassment complaints. The student was found dead in her hostel room weeks after filing a complaint regarding harassment, which the university allegedly ignored.

NSUI National President Varun Choudhary has urged Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Minister of External Affairs Dr S. Jaishankar to intervene and ensure strict action against those responsible. Choudhary criticised both the central and Odisha governments for failing to act swiftly against the accused and the university. “This case not only highlights the negligence towards student safety but also brings international disrepute to India. The BJP governs both the Centre and the State, yet no action has been taken,” he said, calling for immediate steps to curb racial discrimination against Nepali students in India.

The NSUI has also condemned the alleged intimidation of students protesting for justice. According to reports, the KIIT University administration ordered Nepali students to vacate the campus, instead of addressing their grievances. Choudhary denounced this move as an attempt to silence voices demanding accountability.

“The racial discrimination and mistreatment of Nepali students is unacceptable. Instead of ensuring their safety, the university is penalising them for seeking justice,” Choudhary stated. He further called for an independent inquiry into Prakriti Lamsal’s death and legal action against institutions that fail to uphold student safety.

The NSUI has vowed to continue its fight for justice and has urged authorities to implement stricter measures to prevent harassment and discrimination on university campuses.
