NSUI President And Workers Detained Amid Protest March To Parliament

New Delhi: Members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, were detained by the Delhi Police on Thursday. The students were marching towards the Parliament to protest against issues including paper leaks, unemployment, and problems regarding student scholarships.

NSUI National President Varun Choudhary, along with hundreds of NSUI workers, was detained. The ‘Sansad’ march was organised to protest against the government’s failure to address issues like paper leaks, education fund cuts, scholarship cuts, government vacancies, the Agnipath Scheme, and Manipur’s ethnic violence.

Speaking before his detention, Choudhary criticised the government for ignoring the plight of students. He highlighted the discontinuation of the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, regular and continuous paper leaks in public exams, no government vacancies are coming up, and the failure to implement reservation policies.

The national president also accused the government of prioritising the interests of industrialist and billionaire Gautam Adani over the welfare of the nation’s youth.

Their key demands include reinstating scholarships and fellowships for students, including the Maulana Azad National Fellowship. Fellowships and scholarships for SC, ST, OBC, and minorities have witnessed a fund cut of 40-60%.

They demand to drop false cases against protesting students across India and protect student rights. They seek the government to ensure strict implementation of reservation policies, as the data presented in Parliament shows 40-70 percent of posts of OBC, SC, and ST teaching faculty remaining vacant in central universities.

Stopping paper leaks and cracking down on exam scams, filling all 30 lakh vacant government posts immediately, and withdrawing the “anti-youth” Agnipath Scheme, which “runs Army on contract,” are some of their other demands. They also seek immediate intervention to bring peace and normalcy to Manipur.

Before being taken into custody, Choudhary declared, “We will not be silenced. This government has abandoned its responsibility towards students, prioritising corporate interests over education and employment. NSUI will continue to fight for the rights of students and the future of this country.”

Thousands of students coming from different states of India participated in the march. NSUI leaders have vowed to continue their protests until all these demands are met.
