"Bigotry": Moradabad Residents Protest Over House Sale To Muslim Doctor By Fellow Medic

Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh: On Tuesday, a late-night protest erupted in Moradabad’s TDI City housing society after a Hindu doctor sold his house to her Muslim fellow medic. The society, which reportedly housed approximately 450 Hindu families, demanded cancellation of the registration of the property, citing fear of “demographic change” in the Hindu majority area located in the upscale colony on Kanth Road.

The protesting residents claimed that the sale of the house to a Muslim would lead to a trend of other Hindu families leaving their apartments. Dr. Ashok Bajaj had sold his house to Dr. Ikra Chaudhary, and the protesters have alleged the registration happened without their knowledge and was a violation of their society’s social harmony as it previously had no Muslim families.

One of the protesters, Payal Rastogi, stated the doctor sold his house to a non-Hindu without informing them. He said they were living peacefully and there were never any issues before in the area, adding that they wanted Bajaj to get his house registry cancelled. “We have already lodged a complaint with the district administration and local police,” Times of India quoted the protesting resident.

Another resident, Pallavi, said they wanted the house registered again in a Hindu’s name, stating that they have a sanatani culture in their colony and would not allow people from another community to live there.

Regarding the concerns from the residents, District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh said he received complaints and assured peaceful resolution of the matter, and the administration and police are mediating between the parties to maintain communal harmony in the society.

However, many users on social media have reacted to the residents’ protest, calling it an incident of bigotry.

Journalist Suhasini Haidar on her X platform wrote, “Those here decrying communalism only in neighboring countries would do well to take a good look in the mirror.”
