Press Bodies Demand Action Against Delhi Police For Alleged Assault On Female Journalists Covering Delhi Event
New Delhi: Press Club Of India has condemned the Delhi police over alleged assault on two women journalists working with digital news platform 4PM News Network. The reporters – Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan -had alleged that they were assaulted and detained by the Delhi Police following an incident close to the venue of a program attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in South Delhi’s Saket.
One of the journalists also alleged that when the police personnel asked for her name and heard ‘Khan’ in it, the assault against her intensified. She further said that they were specifically targeted for their surnames and for being Muslims.
Recalling the ordeal, one of the victims, Shahin Khan said All the policemen who allegedly beat her, instigated the assault, and stood by watching the incident had left the police station by night. Her complaint was not filed until 3 AM. Shahin has demanded that an FIR be registered against the accused policemen and that they be suspended immediately.
In a social media post, The Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Delhi Union of Journalists, Press Association, and Kerala Union of Working Journalist strongly condemned the incident.
The associations also called for strong punitive action against Delhi Police officials posted at the Saket Police Station, including the Station House Officer (SHO), for “brutally” assaulting freelance journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan while they were reporting about the inauguration of a new wing at the Max Hospital in Saket.
The incident took place on Thursday morning when Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Gupta attended the inauguration of Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital in Saket.
