Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed happiness over the involvement of the people in PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana introduced on February 15 this year. Taking to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said that in about a month since it was launched, over 1 crore households have already registered for the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

The scheme was announced in the interim budget presented on February 1, months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The rooftop scholar scheme known as PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to provide free electricity to households who choose to install rooftop solar units. The project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crores, will provide 300 units of electricity for free to households every month.

Talking about people’s engagement with the project, the Prime Minister said, “Registrations have been pouring in from all parts of the nation. Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have seen over 5 lakh registrations.” The Prime Minister in his post further urged the people who have not registered yet to “do so at the earliest.”

The project covers the household segment with up to a 3 kW system, focusing the residential customers. For households, the subsidy program offers a 60 per cent subsidy on systems up to 2 kW capacity and a 40% subsidy on systems between 2-3 kW. The benefits will not be provided to capacities exceeding 3 kW.

The eligible for the project are Indian citizens owning a house with a suitable rooftop for solar panel installation. The household should have a valid electricity connection, with no prior subsidies for solar panels. People can register in the designated online portal, adding the required details.
