Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today in the US disclosed the financial struggles the grand old party faced during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While speaking to the Indian diaspora in Herndon, Virginia, the former Congress chief said the grand old party faced significant financial obstacles three months before the general elections, noting that the crises involved frozen bank accounts, leaving the party with no resources for election campaigning or advertising.
Terming it was the “first and unprecedented challenge” since his electoral debut in 2004, Rahul Gandhi said they had no money to transport leaders. Revealing the gravity of the financial crises during the election campaign, the Rae Bareilly MP said he remembers it discussing with Mallikarjun Kharge and the treasurer, who had lost his confidence about what to do next. “I said, ‘Dekhi jayegi, dekhte hain kya hota hai’ (We’ll see, let’s see what happens), and that was the spirit with which we fought the election,” said the Congress leader.

The Congress leader further said that the fight was not just about politics, as it is superficial, but it was against the real issues of whether a person will still be allowed to wear his turban as a Sikh, adding that the right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was promoting the idea that some states are inferior to others, that certain languages are inferior to others, and that some religions are inferior to others.
Rahul Gandhi then noted that the Congress, in contrast, believed that people from states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, or Madhya Pradesh all have their own history, tradition, and language, and that every person is important.

Highlighting the electoral setback to the ruling BJP at the Centre in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, the Congress leader said the fear of Prime Minister Modi has vanished among people and alleged that the saffron party and the Prime Minister spread so much fear and pressure of agencies on small businesses.
Rahul Gandhi arrived in Texas on Sunday, and after several programs, the Congress leader reached Washington on Monday and is scheduled to spend two days in the US capital before heading back to Delhi.
