Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress’ Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi and the Congress delegation were stopped at Delhi-UP Board border when they were on their way to Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal which had seen violence after a court ordered survey at the Shahi Juma Masjid.
Congress general secretary in charge of organisation KC Venugopal asked in a social media post that what is the reason behind the Uttar Pradesh Government stopping the Lok Sabha LOP from visiting the families of those who lost their lives in the violence? “It is basic humanity to stand by someone who has suffered such grief and loss,” he added.
“Rahul ji’s motto has been ‘Nafrat ke bazaar mein mohabbat ki dukaan’. And when the ruling regime has created an atmosphere of hatred, it is our duty as the opposition to bring compassion, empathy and love. We are determined to meet the victims’ families in the interest of peace and communal harmony in our country, the UP government must allow the delegation to visit Sambhal,” he said in a social media post.
According to reports, Sambhal authorities have requested neighbouring districts stop Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders at borders and closely monitor their journey to the violence-hit region. Police have placed barricades and deployed forces at the border areas.
Sambhal superintendent of police Krishan Kumar has ordered that no outsiders are allowed to enter the area, noting the restriction under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). He added that if the opposition MPs come, they will be served a notice.
Huge traffic snarls are reported in the Delhi border areas connecting Uttar Pradesh.
On November 30, on their way to violence-hit Sambhal, a delegation of the Samajwadi Party (SP) was also stopped at different place in Uttar Pradesh. Following the further restrictions imposed by the BJP government, the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had alleged the BJP of suppressing truth, noting that the administration wanted to hide their failure in handling the situation.
