Sitaram Yechury’s Body Will Be Donated To AIIMS For Medical Research

The CPI(M) has announced that the body of Sitaram Yechury, the prominent Left leader and general secretary of the CPI(M) who died on Thursday aged 72, will be donated to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for medical research as per his wishes. The veteran politician’s body will be kept at the CPI(M) headquarters, AK Gopalan Bhavan in New Delhi, for public viewing on September 14, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Following this, it will be transferred to AIIMS.

Yechury had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS for respiratory issues, having been admitted to the emergency ward on August 19 and later moved to the Intensive Care Unit. His condition, a pneumonia-like infection, was undisclosed in detail by the medical team, and he had recently undergone cataract surgery.

A respected figure in Indian politics, Yechury served in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017 and was a key member of the CPI(M) Politburo for over 30 years. Known for his eloquence and integrity, Yechury was a significant player in the drafting of the Common Minimum Programme and the formation of the UPA government in 2004. His legacy includes his role in the Students’ Federation of India and his tenure as the general secretary of CPI(M) starting in 2015.
