“My Long-Time Dear Friend…”: Mammootty On Sitaram Yechury

Malayalam acting great Mammootty expressed heartfelt grief at the demise of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who died on Thursday aged 72. In an emotional tribute, Mammootty wrote, “Deeply saddened to hear that my long-time dear friend Sitaram Yechury is no longer with us. An efficient statesman, a wonderful human being and a truly understanding friend. I will miss him dearly.”

Yechury, a prominent political figure, passed away at Delhi’s AIIMS, where he had been undergoing treatment for respiratory issues. Admitted on 19th August, he was moved to the ICU after his condition worsened, and though the exact nature of his ailment wasn’t disclosed, he was reportedly suffering from a pneumonia-like infection.

Yechury, renowned for his oratory skills and his contributions to Indian politics, was a former Rajya Sabha member and a key figure within the CPI(M) for over three decades. He began his political journey in student politics before rising through the ranks to become the party’s general secretary in 2015. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with many remembering him as a figure of integrity and humility.

Earlier, tributes poured in as the news of the death of the Communist politician broke.

“Saddened by the passing away of Shri Sitaram Yechury Ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made a mark as an effective Parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences.

Leader of Opposition-Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said: “Sitaram Yechury ji was a friend. A protector of the Idea of India with a deep understanding of our country. I will miss the long discussions we used to have. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief.”
