Congress leader Sonia Gandhi penned an emotional letter to the people of Rae Bareli announcing that she will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election citing health concerns. Former Congress President filed her nomination as the Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan.
Sonia Gandhi in her letter wrote about the deep down connection she shares with the people of her constituency. “My family remains incomplete in Delhi. It is complete only when I come to Rae Bareli,” she began her letter.

She felt blessed and fortunate enough to be one among the people of Rae Bareli, “I have been fortunate to receive it from my in-laws like a blessing.”
It”s noteworthy that Rae Bareli has been a strong ground for Congress. The roots that the Gandhi family have with the people of Rae Bareli run deep. After India attained independence, in the first Lok Sabha election, Sonia Gandhi’s father-in-law contested and won the election and became the first one to receive a ticket to Delhi. It was then followed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Lauding the appreciation and support received from the people, she added, “Since then, this journey has progressed with love and enthusiasm through the ups and downs of life and our faith has only grown stronger”.
Mrs Gandhi further penned that her path was later illuminated by Rae Bareli and allowed her to walk again. After the demise of her husband and mother-in-law, she sought shelter from the people of Rae Bareli.
Revisiting the bitter experiences of Congress in the last Lok Sabha election, she said “even in adverse circumstances, you stood by me like a rock”. Being extremely grateful for the support she wrote, “I am proud to say that whatever I am today, it is because of you, and I have always endeavored to uphold this trust.”
Stating her reason for not being able to contest the Lok Sabha election, melancholy she said that though she will not have the opportunity to directly serve them anymore but still her heart will always remain with them.
Expressing her confidence in the unending support of her people, she concluded, “Greetings to the elders! Affection to the young ones! Promise to meet soon”.
