The Forest department officials in the Annamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on Friday rescued and reunited an abandoned elephant calf, aged about four to five months, with its mother within five hours.
The calf has discovered roaming alone in Pannimedu estate area, separated from its mother. As per the sources, local found the stranded calf and communicated it to forest department. Around 8.30am, Manambolly forest range officer A Manikandan and team has received information on the calf, and found the calf at least 3 km from the Pannimedu estate area, Times of India reports. Following, the staff rushed to the spot and rescued the calf. Calf was loaded into the vehicle and taken to the nearby reserve forest.

Meanwhile, officials began the search for locating elephant herd and using the advanced drone technology, they spotted the herd in a private estate three km away. Then the calf had given bath in a river and coated mud on its body to remove any human imprints or smells. After that the calf was reunited with the mother and herd at a shola forest, near to the Pannimedu estate area around 1.30 pm, TOI reports.
Besides, the forest department has positioned four teams in the locality to observe the calf and the herd.
