The inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya took place today, January 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ram Temple. In the event, along with Prime Minister, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, and UP Governor Anandiben Patel, were also present. The ceremony was witnessed by more than 7,000 dignitaries from across the world.
The Timeline Of Events
1528: Mughal emperor Babar”s general secretary Mir Baqi constructed a mosque in Ayodhya”s Ramkot, which Hindus believed to be Ram”s birthplace.
1600: Akbar gives six bighas (signifiying measure of land, one bigha is equal to .67 acre in Uttar Pradesh ) for construction of Hanuman Sila temple.
1775: Siraj-ud-daula, the third nawab of Awadh, shifts his court from Faizabad to Lucknow, providing Bairagi sadhus the chance to repair and rebuild temples.
1856-57: A religious violence occurred over the site of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya for the first time, and it was around the time of the transfer of power to the British government. Outside the mosque, a railing is set up.
1934: In December, the idols of Ram and Sita placed within the premises. The mosque has been locked permanently, the government announced it a “disputed site”.
1950: Following Gopal Singh Visharad and Paramhansa Ramachandra submiting plea, court gave permission to perform pujas. Muslims claim that the idols has been placed inside the mosque which lead to civil suits by both parties. The inner courtyard gates remains locked.
1959: Nirmoni Akhara files a case, appealing possession of the land.
1961: Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board files a petition in Faizabad civil court declaring Babri Mosque as property of board.
1984: A committee for the Ram Mandir movement was formed under BJP then-President LK Advani. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) heads this movement to ‘liberate’ the birthplace of Lord Ram and build a temple.
1986: Ayodhya court orders the mosque to be opened for Hindus for worship. Muslims formed the Babri Mosque Action Committee in protest.
1989: The VHP laid the foundations of a Ram temple near the disputed mosque. All suits pending at the Faizabad court were transferred to Allahabad High Court.
1990: LK Advani launched a nationwide Rath Yatra from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Communal riots broke out in the country.
1992: On December 6, 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished by the kar sevaks in the presence of leaders from VHP, Shiv Sena, and BJP. In the resultant communal riots, at least 2,000 people lost their lives.
2002: Coach no. S-6 of Sabarmati Express carrying kar sevaks from Ayodhya to Gujarat was burnt near Godhra station. At least 58 people are killed and in the subsequent riot in Gujarat more than 1000 lives lost. In April, Allahabad High Court began proceedings on the Ayodhya title dispute case.
2003: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertook survey at the disputed site as per court”s direction. The survey claims to have found evidence of a temple beneath the mosque, but the Muslim side questions the findings.
2010: Allahabad High court delivered its judgement on the all pending suits. As per the ruling, the disputed land should be divided into three parts between Ram Lalla, the Islamic Waqf Board,and the Nirmohi Akhara.
2011: In May, all the parties filed an appeal against the Allahabad High Court”s judgement. The Supreme Court stayed the high court ruling of splitting the disputed land into three parts.
2019: On November, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court led by then CJI Ranjan Gogoi issued its final verdict – Ram Temple to be constructed on the disputed site, and directed the government to allocate an alternative five acres of land at a different location for the mosque.
2020: August 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of Ram Temple.
2024: January 22, Consecration ceremony or Pran Pratishtha of Ayodhya Ram Temple.
