Umar Khalid Gets Interim Bail From Delhi High Court To Attend Ailing Mother

The Delhi High Court on Friday granted interim bail to student activist Umar Khalid for two days to attend to his ailing mother and participate in a family religious ritual.

Umar Khalid, who has been lodged in jail since September 2020 in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, will be released on interim bail from June 1 to June 3.

The High Court’s decision came days after a Delhi trial court rejected his plea for temporary release.

According to his plea, Khalid’s mother has been advised to undergo surgery for lump excision at a private hospital on June 2. He had also sought permission to attend the Chehlum ritual of his uncle, observed 40 days after a family member’s death under Islamic traditions.

The plea stated that Khalid’s 71-year-old father was unable to take care of his mother due to age-related issues, while his five sisters live away after marriage. Being the eldest son in the family, Khalid argued that his presence was necessary during and after the surgery.

Earlier, the Karkardooma Court had rejected his request, observing that other family members could support his mother and that attending the Chehlum ceremony was not essential.

Khalid has previously received interim bail on multiple occasions, including a 14-day release in December last year to attend his sister’s wedding under strict conditions.

The former JNU student leader faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other provisions in connection with the 2020 North East Delhi riots case.

According to the Delhi Police, several student activists involved in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) allegedly conspired to engineer the riots that broke out in February 2020.
