There was a time, even America, the country which was often dubbed as the greatest power in the world, sought help from Manmohan Singh.

During a time when Singh was under attack by the ruling BJP, former US President Barak Obama opened up about how he helped during a time of financial crisis for Washington. Obama said Singh was a great support in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.

Obama also wrote about Singh in his memoir. He called the former Prime Minister the “chief architect of India’s economic transformation” and “wise, thoughtful, and scrupulously honest”.

Singh was a “self-effacing technocrat who’d won the people’s trust not by appealing to their passions but bringing about higher living standards and maintaining a well-earned reputation for not being corrupt”, the former US President wrote in his memoir.

“While he would be cautious in foreign policy, unwilling to get out too far ahead of an Indian bureaucracy that was historically suspicious of US intentions, our time together confirmed my initial impression of him as a man of uncommon wisdom and decency”, Obama wrote.
