Zomato Temporarily Suspended Non-Vegetarian Food Delivery On Ram Temple Event Day

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saket Gokhale took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and severely criticised the BJP, saying that a religious event in one town ends up forcing “unconstitutional restrictions” on what people in other cities can eat. Saket Gokhale was referring to Zomato’s decision not to deliver non-vegetarian food in Northern India, citing a government order.

Pointing the tone of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”s celebration of faith during the Ram temple event, the TMC MP said that the BJP”s celebration is incomplete without “humiliation and bullying.” The TMC leader said that “BJP’s celebration of faith lies primarily in depriving & snatching the rights of others.”

After announcing the one-day suspension of its non-vegetarian food delivery services in North India, the Indian multinational food delivery company had informed that it is complying with the government order. The issue came to the notice of the customers when people on X reported the non-availability of the non-vegetarian items upon their order.

However, following the speculations that the issue could be in connection with the Ram temple consecration day, the company addressed the increasing number of queries from customers, saying that the suspension of non-veg items was in compliance with the government”s notice. “We have disabled delivery of non-veg items in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as per govt. notice. Hope this clarification helps,” the company”s customer care support team clarified.

Apart from this, several restaurants had collectively decided not to serve non-vegetarian themes on January 22. The Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Durga Shankar Mishra also had issued a formal order asking the district magistrates to ensure the closure of liquor and meat shops. Some other states had also placed restrictions considering the consecration of the temple.

The Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during her address at the all-faith harmonious rally on January 22 had asserted that she will resist and object to the diktats on what to wear and what to eat coming from majoritarian political groups in the country.
