About Proposed 6-Lane Elevated Highway Along Aroor-Edappally Bypass
The proposed six-lane elevated highway along the Aroor-Edappally bypass is under review as part of the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) infrastructure development agenda. The project aims to ease congestion along this critical stretch, which serves as a major transit route in Kerala.
The government has confirmed that the work on preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), including the alignment study, has already been awarded. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was responding to set of questions asked by Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The final decision regarding the project will depend on the outcomes of the DPR, which will assess factors such as traffic density, speed variations, road conditions, and overall infrastructure integration under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
Authorities have also indicated that if the project is approved, the DPR preparation process could be expedited to facilitate early execution. However, no specific timeline has been provided yet for the approval and construction phases.
Meanwhile, to address the growing traffic congestion in the region, NHAI is exploring alternative solutions, but further details on these measures have not been disclosed. The elevated corridor project remains a key focus, given its potential to significantly enhance road connectivity and reduce travel time in the area.
“The Government sanctions and approves proposals of ring roads, bypasses & elevated corridors for development in major cities/ urban centers and State capitals in consultation with State Governments to decongest traffic and alleviate choke points on National Highways. As far as the proposed stretch is concerned, the work for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), including alignment study has been awarded. Decision will be taken based on outcome of DPR, traffic density, speed drop, number of road entering/exiting the city, condition of roads, inter-se priority and synergy with PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan,” the minister said in his reply.
