Faisal Faisu: First Transgender To Own Land In Kerala

Marking history, Faisal Faisu becomes the first land owner under “transgender” identity in Kerala. Hailing from Thrissur”s Chavakkad, her ownership of a piece of land is out of her strong will and fighting spirit.

Faisal Faisu, from early on realised that her body is of a man and mind is of a woman. Though she survived her share of resistance, now, her family is supporting her.

When panchayat authorities informed her that if she has land on her name, they will consider her Life Mission Sheme, housing project by Kerala government, led her to start working on buying the land.

Though she gathered money via savings, pawning ornaments of sister-in-law, and through borrowing money, she faced difficulty when it came to register the land. The online registration form had only two columns; man and woman. But she wanted to register in her identity as transgender and the efforts started thereupon. She submitted requests to District Collector, Registrar office, Social Justice office, and IT cell. Finally on December 19, she has received a call from Registrar office informing the inclusion of transgender column in the application form as she wished. On the very next day, she registered the land under her name.

Faisal Faisu believes her success will be a motivation for many transgenders. She is currently working as a transgender link worker in Kochi under Life Mission Scheme.
