Heavy Rain In Kerala: Mullaperiyar Dam Spillway Gates Opened In Idukki
The spillway gates of the Mullaperiyar Dam have been opened on Saturday, with three gates raised 75 centimetres each, allowing 1,063 cubic feet of water to flow into the Periyar River. The current water level in the dam stands at 138.25 feet.
Authorities have urged residents living along the Periyar River to exercise extreme caution, following the sudden rise in water levels and the release of water through the spillway gates.
The Idukki district has experienced heavy rainfall, with Koottar recording 100 mm and Vellayamkudi 188 mm of rain. The increase in inflow due to the rains prompted dam officials to open the spillway gates to manage water levels effectively.

There is also a chance of intense rainfall in the hilly regions, along with thunderstorms and strong winds in the afternoon, and residents have been advised to remain alert.

In view of strong winds and turbulent sea conditions, fishing activities have been banned along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts. The IMD has also indicated that the south-eastern Arabian Sea and adjacent Lakshadweep areas may experience cyclonic activity that is likely to intensify from a low-pressure system.
Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure public safety and proper management of water levels in the dam.
