Heavy Rain With Thunderstorm, Lightning Hit Kerala’s Kozhikode And Other Districts

As predicted by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning hit Kozhikode today early morning, and still continuing. After a three month long intense summer heat in the state, the IMD has predicted on Monday that isolated heavy rain will likely to hit isolated places till Friday. The IMD had issued yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki, and heavy rainfall was happened in various districts in Kerala except Kannur, Kasaragod and Kottayam.

According to the weather office, heavy rain in the Southern state is expected till May 17.

9 districts, namely Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad is predicted to receive heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

In Kozhikode, the heavy with earth shaking thunderstorm and lightning continued around 5.30 am, which was started early morning around 2.30 am.

“Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty winds, speed reaching 40-50 Kmph, is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 13th, 16th & 17th May 2024. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty winds, speed reaching 30-40 Kmph, is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 14th & 15th May 2024,” reads the IMD alert.

Apart from Kerala, IMD has predicted scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning & squally winds (40-50 kmph) likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Karnataka during next 7 days and isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied withthunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema during the same period.

“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe during 13th-17th; Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka during 13th-16th; North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 13th May, 2024,” the IMD release said.

The IMD reported maximum wind speed (kmph) during past 24 hours till 08.30 hours on Friday as 57 for Wayanad, 44 for Kozhikode and 40 for Kasaragod.
