The victim, identified as 32-year-old Binil TB from Thrissur, was killed during a gunfight.

Thrissur, Kerala: A man from Kerala, who was forced to fight for a Russian mercenary force for several months was reportedly killed during a gunfight on Monday. The Indian Embassy on Monday informed the family of the man killed in Russia.

The victim, identified as 32-year-old Binil TB from Thrissur, was allegedly shot dead by Ukrainian forces. It is reported that another man from Thrissur, who is also fighting on the ground in Russia, was injured and shifted to a hospital in Moscow. The injury occurred during a shelling attack by Ukrainian forces, according to the report by Malayalam news portal Onmanorama. The man, identified as Jain, who is currently at a hospital in Russia, spoke to his family via a WhatsApp call.

The victims had gone to Russia in April last year for employment in the military support services, such as cooks, drivers, electricians, plumbers, and so on, but were compelled to give up their passports and apply for permanent residence in Russia. Later, they were enlisted in the Russian mercenary force and fought on the frontlines purportedly against their wishes.

In August last year, another man from Thrissur, Sandeep Chandran, was killed in a shell attack in Russia along with a few others after arriving there for work as a cook, cleaner, or electrician at a cafe in Moscow. Youths from Thiruvananthapuram are also currency-struck in Russia after arriving there on the promise of jobs with a salary of Rs 2 lakh per month.

Following reports of recruitment through fake promises to Russian military from India, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had raided several agencies and visa consultancies for sending citizens to the war-torn region to allegedly to serve in the military.
