Oil, Chemical Spill In Arabian Sea After Cochin Ship Accident - Government Said This
Alappuzha: Concerns have emerged about a potential oil or chemical spill in the Arabian Sea in the wake of a recent ship accident off the Cochin coast, triggering anxiety among coastal communities. However, authorities have moved swiftly, and the Kerala government has assured the public that there is no cause for panic.
Customs officials, in coordination with environmental and disaster management agencies, have begun operations to remove a damaged container that drifted toward the shore. According to early assessments, the container contains cotton, not hazardous chemicals, and is being transported safely to the Kollam yard for further inspection.
Speaking to the media, Kerala’s Minister for Agriculture, P Prasad, addressed the public concerns. “Customs is taking the needed measures here. All the equipment and vehicles have been deployed to remove the container and ensure that there is no chemical contamination onshore. There is no need to panic or worry,” he said.

The incident had initially raised fears of a chemical spill, but Minister Prasad clarified, “The container has cotton — it is pure cotton. Not all containers involved in the incident contained cotton, which may have caused some anxiety, but I want to reassure everyone that the government is in constant coordination with all relevant agencies.”
He further emphasised the state’s preparedness in dealing with any potential fallout. “We are aware, and the government is fully prepared and well-planned. If any container comes ashore, especially those suspected of carrying oil or chemicals, necessary caution will be taken immediately,” the minister stated.
So far, no chemical traces have been detected along the Alappuzha or neighbouring coastal areas. Nevertheless, companies operating near the shore have been placed under scrutiny as a precautionary measure. Emergency response teams and marine safety units remain on standby.
