New Delhi: Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, Ms Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today urged the union Home Minister Amit Shah to provide immediate relief to the calamity-hit people in Kerala.

Ms Vadra led a delegation of MPs from Kerala, including the Congress general secretary organisation KC Venugopal, to meet the union Home Minister to press for the release of disaster aid to the people.

During the meeting, Ms Vadra highlighted the need for immediate assistance to help affected families, rebuild their lives and restore essential infrastructure in the region. She said the tragedy needed to be considered beyond partisan politics.

Ms Vadra urged the Home Minister to urgently consider releasing the required funds to support the rehabilitation efforts in view of the severity of the disaster.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Ms Vadra said, the delegation brought to the Home Minister’s notice the ground reality prevailing in Wayanad after the devastating natural calamity.

Ms Vadra disclosed that a large area had been affected, so many people have been killed, with some families wiped out completely. She observed, under such a situation, if the central government does not provide any relief, it sends the wrong message.

She said that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the disaster-hit areas, a sense of hope had risen among people that they might get central assistance. But, she added, they haven’t got any relief from the centre even after four months.

Replying to another question, she said, the delegation has given representations to the Prime Minister as well, apart from the Home Minister.

Ms Vadra said she appealed to the Home Minister that “we should rise above partisan politics and truly recognise the pain and the suffering that these people have gone through because the suffering is immense”.

“There are children who have lost every single member of their family. Who can they turn to, if they cannot turn to the government of India?” she asked.

The Congress general secretary said that the Home Minister has told them that they will be provided with the details of what has been done so far and what can further be done to provide relief to the disaster-hit people by Thursday evening.
