Southwest monsoon Likely To Hit Kerala Early This Year: IMD Experts

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Kerala will see the southwest monsoon earlier this year, as weather experts observe the climatic conditions remain favourable for Kerala to reach monsoon earlier. Normally, Kerala will witness the onset of monsoon on June 1.

Noting that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16, which is also four days ahead of its normal onset date, the monsoon may be reaching Kerala earlier than usual timeframe.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) director Neetha K Gopal, monsoon reaches the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 20 and Kerala around June 1, under normal conditions.

“Though this suggests a gap of around 10 days, the interval is not fixed. During the 10-day period, fresh low-pressure systems and other weather disturbances can either accelerate or delay the monsoon’s advance,” The New Indian Express quoted the IMD director.
