Professor Omchery NN Pillai, the noted Malayalam author and novelist, died at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s Hospital on Friday. He was under treatment for age-related ailments. Pillai has contributed significantly to Malayalam literature, and he had been living in Delhi for the past 76 years. He reached to Delhi as an employee of Akashvani and worked with Malayalam news.
Pillai has been the recipient of various state and national accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.

Born in Kottayam, Pillai moved to Delhi after his primary education, Omchery was in the helm of all Malayalee organizations in Delhi, and was a bridge between Malayalees and the national capital. Condoling his demise, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan called Pillai an unparalleled cultural icon.
