In Kurnool Lok Sabha constituency, it’s a three-way tussle of power like most of the other states of Andhra Pradesh. The battle was between Indian National Congress, Telugu Desam Party, and YSR Congress Party (Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party). This year the competition was between PG Ram Pullaiah Yadav (Indian National Congress) Basthipati Nagaraju (TDP), and BY Ramaiah (YSRCP), with Nagaraju clinching victory with the margin of 1,11,298 votes.
Formed in 1989, the constituency has been a bastion of Congress for a very long time. Congress held power from 1989 to 2014, with the exception of 1999 to 2004, when TDP took power.
When Jagan Mohan Reddy started his own party YSR Congress Party in 2011, general election following it played as a game changer for Congress and its hold in Kurnool. Since 2014, the constituency is under the grip of YSRCP.
In 2019 General Election, Sanjeev Kumar of YSRCP won the seat over the majority of 148,889 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, YSRCP’s Butta Renuka has won with a majority of 44,131 votes. Interestingly, TDP always managed to be the runner up. Since the 1989, when Congress was the player to 2014 and 2019, when YSRCP took over, TDP managed to come second and failed to be the winner, with the exception of 1999 General election.
