Badruddin Ajmal, the founder of the All India Democratic Front (AIUDF), is representing the Dubri constituency for the third time, followed by two consecutive wins in Dubri. Through this, Dubri was all set to face a triangular battle between AIUDF, Rakhibul Hussain of the Grand Old Party Congress, and Zabed Islam of AGP.
Badruddin Ajmal made his political debut in 2005, when the the Supreme Court struck the Illegal Migrants (Determination Tribunal) Act, which paved the way for the establishment of All India United Democratic Front. During the 2006 elections, however, his party managed to win 10 seats fighting the Congress. he was elected simultaneously from two constituencies South Salmara and Jamunamukh by a large margin of votes.
His arrival to politics stormed the political environment of the entire Dhubri constituency as he won the 2009 Lok Shaba election against the Congress which had built its empire in that region for about three decades. He declared his victory against the ruling Congress as he secured 540,820 votes, which is a total of 51.7% of votes. He defeated Anwar Hussain who secured 34.5% with 356,401 votes.
In the 2011 assembly polls, his party emerged as the largest opposition party in Assam by securing 18 seats in the legislative assembly.
His political influence peaked in the 2014 Lok Sabha election when he again declared his second consecutive win against the grand old party by securing 592,569 votes, defeating the congress candidate Wafed Ali Choudhry who managed to secure 362,839 votes.
He swept away the grand old part from the Dubri constituency through his third consecutive win in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, where he secured 7,18,764 votes against the Congress candidate Abu Taher Bebari, who secured 4,92,506 votes.
As Dubri became the ‘land of AIUDF’, this election will determine his fourth consecutive win against the triangular battle between AIUDF, Rakhibul Hussain of the Grand Old Party, and Zabed Islam of AGP.
