With the BJP announced its first list of candidates, the sitting MP from the Shahdol constituency has been given the ticket for the second consecutive time in the same seat. Born in Delhi in 1988, Himadri Singh completed her BA in 2012 from Monad University.
The BJP MP comes from a family with a rich political history, with both her parents being long-term leaders of the Congress party. Himadri Singh had contested the 2016 Lok Sabha by-election on Congress ticket but lost to the BJP candidate Gyan Singh. She, then joined the BJP and was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in the 2019 general elections.
The constituency”s assembly segments comprise Jaisingnagar, Jaitpur, Kotma, Anuppur, Pushprajgarh, Bandhavgarh, Manpur and Barwara. All the assembly seats are currently held by the BJP except one. Shahdol is reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Tribes.
The Shahdol Lok Sabha seat has been held by the BJP since 2014. During the 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP’s Dalpat Singh Paraste wrested the seat from Congress by securing 54 percent of votes while the then-sitting MP and Congress candidate Rajesh Nandini Singh”s vote per cent was reduced to 29 per cent. Mr Rajesh Singh had in 2009 secured 41 per cent votes, securing a narrow victory against the BJP candidate.
However, It is learnt that Himadri Singh’s majority in the 2019 general election and her popularity prompted the leadership to field her for another term in the constituency. She had secured more than 60 percent of votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, reducing the Congress candidate to 27 per cent.
