Congress' Amarjit Kaur Sahoke To Face Four-Cornered Battle From Faridkot

Congress nomination of  Amarjit Kaur Sahoke from Punjab”s Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency was quite expected for the sitting MP Muhammad Sadiq, who captured the seat from the AAP’s Sadhu Singh in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

After the announcement of the ticket, the disgruntled sitting MP commented that it was the discretion of the party”s high command. “Being the sitting MP, I was interested in contesting from Faridkot but the decision is in the hands of the high command,” he said.

However, the grand old party’s pick of Amarjit Kaur Sahoke is believed to reach out to more voters and to minimise the anti-incumbency.

Amarjit Kaur Sahoke is a retired teacher. She entered politics by joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party and became the chairperson of Maga Zila Parishad in 2014. Sahoke had also unsuccessfully contested the 2017 Punjab assembly elections as a SAD candidate from Jagraon constituency.

Though she was defeated, she had a remarkable performance in her debut securing 24 per cent of the vote share Amarjit Kaur Sahoke Left the SAD and joined the Congress party in 2022. The former Shiromani Akali Dal leader”s husband, also a Congress politician, had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections.

Notably, the 2024 Lok Sabha election in the seat is expected to be a four-cornered battle as all the influential parties including AAP, Congress, SAD and BJP going alone to face the elections.

In a recent event, the 46-year-old Congress leader said that if she was sent to the parliament, she would make all the efforts for the development of the constituency.

However, with a four-cornered fierce competition predicted, the Congress candidate will have to face the ruling AAP’s candidate Karamjit Anmol, BJP’s Hans Raj Hans and SAD’s Rajwinder Singh. The polling for the seat will be held on June 1.
