India's Covid Cases Near 4,000; Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra On Alert

India’s active Covid-19 cases climbed to 3,961, with Kerala topping the chart at over 1,400 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 506 active cases, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) on Sunday, June 1. In the past 24 hours, 360 new cases were reported nationwide, along with two deaths – one each in Kerala and Karnataka.

In Kerala, a 24-year-old woman suffering from sepsis, hypertension, and decompensated chronic liver disease succumbed to the virus. In Karnataka, a 63-year-old man with pulmonary TB and oral cancer died after testing positive for Covid-19. The Karnataka government responded by urging people to wear masks in crowded areas and maintain social distancing and hygiene protocols.

Maharashtra recorded 65 new cases, bringing the total number of infections since January 1 to 814. Among the recent cases, Pune reported 31, Mumbai 22, Thane 9, Kolhapur 2, and Nagpur 1. The state currently has 506 active cases, with 300 recoveries so far.

Other states are also witnessing a rise. Delhi reported the highest single-day spike with 47 new cases and one death, a 60-year-old woman who had undergone surgery and tested positive incidentally. The total number of infections in Delhi now stands at 483, with four deaths in the current wave.

West Bengal added 82 cases, raising its active case count to 287, while Odisha has 12 mild cases in isolation. Gurugram, after a gap of nearly two and a half years, is seeing a resurgence with 23 cases, 12 of which are active. Civil Surgeon Dr Alka Singh advised residents not to ignore flu-like symptoms.

Punjab currently has six active cases, including two children of a deceased patient and one recent returnee from Kerala. Andhra Pradesh minister K. Parthasarathi has urged the public to avoid large gatherings and continue following Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Amid the uptick, Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav assured that the central government is fully equipped to manage any evolving Covid-19 situation. The RT-PCR testing, monitoring, and isolation protocols are being reinforced across several states.
