CPM Chooses Joice George For Idukki Constituency To Wrest Seat From Congress

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

As CPM announced the list of candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the party chose Joice George for the third time in the Idukki constituency. As a former MP from the constituency, the party believes that Mr George can wrest the seat from the incumbent Congress MP, Dean Kuriakose.

As a CPM independent candidate, Joice George had defeated Congress’s Dean Kuriakose in the 2014 general election, becoming an MP from the constituency. However, in the 2019 general election, Mr George failed to Congress’s dean Kuriakose. The fight has thus become between the two parties for the past years.

In 2014, Mr George secured 46 per cent of the total votes against the 40 per cent gained by the congress candidate. He was a CPM-supported independent candidate in 2014. After his ascent to the parliament, he held important positions. From September 2014 to December, he served as a Member, of the Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers Member, Consultative Committee, of the Ministry of Law and Justice. From then onwards, he became the Member, Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice. He is also an advocate and has been engaging in environment protection initiatives and education empowerment programs.

The CPM candidate had in 2021 found himself in a row after his remark against the congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Mr George had said that Rahul Gandhi only goes to girls’ colleges. He in his speech at a public meeting of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) also asked the girls not to interact with the Congress leader as he is not married yet. However, Mr George later expressed regret over his remark on Rahul Gandhi.

With CPM choosing Mr George for the Idukki seat for another term, the party has great expectations as he has already proven his mettle in the constituency.
