The Election Commission today rejected comedian Shyam Rangeela“s nomination from Uttar Pradesh”s Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, where the Prime Minister is contesting. He had filed his nomination on May 14 as an independent candidate. However, a day later. the EC”s website showed that his nomination has been rejected.

Reacting to the EC”s action, Shyam Rangeela expressed his despair for not being “allowed to fight.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the comedian wrote that his heart was broken, “but the courage was not broken.” “Thanks for all your cooperation. Media and well-wishers are requested to please do not call now, I will keep giving whatever information I get here, perhaps I don”t feel like talking for a while now,” he wrote.

Notably, there were reports earlier that Shyam Rangeela, who challenged the Prime Minister in Varanasi experienced difficulties in filing his nomination. He had complained that he was denied the opportunity to file nomination multiple times from the Varanasi seat, terming it a denial of fundamental rights.

He had said that he could see democracy being dismantled, noting that he could not obtain nomination papers despite completing all the processes as said by the officials.

Rangeela had cited the growing intolerance towards political satire and mimicry as a reason for him to join the politics. Shyam Rangeela was known for mimicking the Prime Minister Modi. Recently, the comedian announced that he would contest the Lok Sabha elections against Prime Minister Modi.

In an interview with Indian Express earlier, the 29-year-old mimicry artist said that he entered into politics because politics entered into his world of comedy. During the interview, he also talked about his motivation to contest against the Prime Minister, noting that he wanted democracy to live on. “we won’t let democracy come under threat here,” he said.

He had also claimed that he was a Modi fan during the 2014 general elections. The elections in Varanasi will be held in the final phase on June 1. The Congress” Ajay Rai has been pictured against the Prime Minister from the constituency.
