Being represented by Congress and AIUDF for decades, Barpeta witnessed the first-ever victory of Assam Gana Parishad through this Lok Sabha election as Phani Bhusan Choudhry won the constituency with a margin of 2,22,351 votes.
Mr Choudhury secured 8,52,893 votes defeating Deep Bayan with a margin of 2,22,351 votes and the Congress candidate secured 6,37,762 votes.
The AGP candidate who had a distinct record of representing the Bongaigaon constituency for 8 consecutive times in the Assam Legislative Assembly since 1985. This constituency attracted interest among the public, when the grand old party replaced its incumbent MP Abdul Khaleque by fielding Deep Bayan. Abdul Khaleque resigned from Congress after he was denied a seat.
Phani Bhusan Choudhury, with a distinct record, he also served as the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs from 2018 to 2021 in the Sarbananda Sonowal ministry. Phani was a member of the Housing Committee of the Assam Legislative Assembly, a Member, of the Public Undertakings Committee of the Assam Legislative Assembly Minister from 1996 to 2001. He was also Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee from 2009 to 2011 and leader of the AGP Legislature party from 2011 to 2016. He was also erected as a Protem speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2021.
The Barpeta Constituency, a general category Parliament Constituency, i.e., not reserved for any specific category, it comprises the entire Bongaigon district and the parts of Barpeta and Nalbari districts. Barpeta, also referred as Temple City, was once a very well-known weavers’ town. The Barpeta seat, which is majorly comprised of Muslims with 55.2% of the total electorate, had witnessed the victory of Abdul Khaleque in 2019, Sirajussin Ajmal of AIUDF in 2009, and Ismail Hussain of Congress in 2009.
