Even After 10 Years, Congress Couldn't Manage 100 Figure: Prime Minister During NDA Meeting

During the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s meeting held in the old parliament building today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi derided the Congress party by saying that grand old party could not touch 100 mark in the lower house even after ten years.

Addressing the meeting, the Prime Minister claimed that the saffron party has got more seats in this election than the total seats the Congress got in 2014, 2019 and 2024 combined. “We were not defeated, nor are we defeated… We know how to digest victory,” the Prime Minister added.

Narendra Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) had fell short of an absolute majority when the result of the Lok Sabha elections was declared. The party required the support of its allies, especially Chandrababu Naidu’s Telegu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) as both received 16 and 12 seats, respectively.

Notably, the saffron party’s tally went from 303 in 2019 to 240 in 2024, showing a significant dip in its votes share across the country. The result, which depicted an electoral debacle of the BJP and created a dent on the stated invincibility of the Prime Minister, was quite opposite to the expectations of the party’s top brass.

The BJP leaders, including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Aditya Nath, among others had reiterated that the NDA will cross 400 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

However, taunting the Congress, the Prime Minister further said that he could see people in INDIA bloc sinking slowly earlier….”Now they are going to sink at a faster pace,” said the Prime Minister.

The Congress-led INDI alliance received 232 seats, while the Congress alone bagged 99 when the result of the General Election was declared. During the past two Lok Sabha elections, the grand old party faced huge loses as its tally was 44 in 2014 and 52 in 2019. In 2009, the party had crossed triple digit, accumulating 206 seats, paving the way for the second consecutive term for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.
