Among the 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has decided to field six women candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Savitri Thakur is one of them. She will contest from the Dhar parliamentary constituency. The party leadership declared her candidacy by replacing the sitting MP, Chhatar Singh Darbar.

Savitri Thakur previously represented the Dhar constituency. In the 2014 elections, Thakur won the seat by defeating Congress rival Umang Singhar by a margin of 1,04,328 votes. Prior to this, she was elected as a District Panchayat member in 2003, and from 2004 to 2009, she served as the District Panchayat President. Besides, she was also a member of the parliamentary committee on industry.

Savitri Thakur began his career as a social worker. She served as the coordinator of the NGO Vashp for 9 years. Though Thakur”s family is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the predecessor of the BJP, politics is an entirely new territory for them. Her entry into politics was with the aim of empowering the poor, especially tribal communities.

Thakur exercised the role of District Vice President of the BJP. Later, she got elected to the post of Director of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee, Dhamnod. Aside from this, Savitri Thakur held various positions in the party.

There were many strong contenders for the seat, including former minister Ranjana Baghel and former MP Gajendra Singh Rajukhedi, who recently shifted his allegiance from Congress to the BJP. It is being said that sitting MP Chhatar Singh Darbar”s age was a factor in denying him a ticket again from Dhar. While placing trust in Savitri Thakur after 10 years, the party is hoping for nothing but a win. Dhar Lok Sabha constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
