Kanwar Singh Tanwar, who won the general elections in 2014 from Amroha after defeating Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Kamal Akhtar’s wife Humera Akhtar, faced defeat in the 2019 elections against the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Kunwar Danish Ali, who secured 51 percent of the votes.

The Delhi-born Tanwar has been a social worker for almost two decades. During the pandemic, in 2021, Tanwar donated around Rs 50 lakh for setting up an oxygen plant in the Amroha district. In a letter to the district magistrate, he stated that he wants to ensure that there is no shortage of oxygen supply for people in Amroha. He also provided three ambulances to the health department during the severe shortage of oxygen in the district.

Notably, the industrialist is also known for running a free ambulance service in Amroha since 2012, giving him the moniker of Ambulance MP.

Tanwar’s opponent and incumbent Lok Sabha MP, Kunwar Danish Ali, has been nominated again under the Congress ticket, following his suspension from the BSP for indulging in anti-party activities.

Amroha is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, which consists of Dhanaura (SC reserved), Naugawan Sadat, Amroha, Hasanpur, and Garhmukteshwar. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a stronghold over three of the Vidhan Sabhas, while the Samajwadi Party has Naugawan Sadat and Amroha as their assembly segments.

Despite losing the last general election, the saffron party has expressed its confidence in Tanwar for the third time by nominating him as the candidate standing for the Amroha Lok Sabha seat.
