Journalists, Politicians Demand Action Against Anchors Who Defamed Rhea For TRP

As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closed the actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case, affirming that it was a suicide and that there were no abetments, some of the suspects, including actress Rhea Chakraborty, have got a big relief from years of media trials and mental agony.

One of the major victims of the media trial after Rajput was found hanging from the ceiling of his apartment in Mumbai in 2020, has been his then girlfriend and actor Rhea Chakraborty. After Rajput’s father made allegations against Rhea that she and her family misappropriated his son’s money, a section of the media treated the actress like a criminal, running after her and abusing her relentlessly.

However, with the probe agency giving Rhea and her family a clean chit in the case, several journalists have come out demanding a public apology from the fellow media professionals who indulged in harassing the actress and her family holding her culpable through media trials for the Television Rating Point (TRP) rates.

Reacting to the development, journalist Rohini Singh dup up a social media post by Navika Kujmar, senior journalist and Times Now Group Editor-in-Chief, showing Kujmar boasting that she had exposed Reha’s drug chat, and then claiming that the actress betrayed Rajput and his family. Celebrating Reha’s arrest back in 2020. The Times Now anchor further wrote, “Time for questions on real journalism,” while adding a smiley emoji.

Referring the smiley, Rohini in her post, asked the viewers to look at the emoji while noting, “Great joy at slandering a woman, harassing a grieving girlfriend, bullying her, abusing her, lying about her, doing everything possible to destroy her.”  “This is the true face of Noida anchors,”Rohini wrote, slamming the Times Now journalist.

Many politicians have also reacted to the CBI clean chit given to actress Reha and her family. Sharing the prime-time debate of Times Now featuring Navika Kujmar, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi slammed the channel, expressing her hope it is sued to extinction. “This bloodthirsty, motivated reporting. “Hope the channel is sued to extinction,” she wrote on X.

Echoing similar sentiments, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien also lambasted the channel, asking who owns it, asserting that it was time to call out the media owners.

Prominent journalist Rajdeep Sardesai noted that a large section of the news media owes “a huge apology to Rhea Chakraborty and her family,” pointing out that they all destroyed a family for their “shitty” TRPs. “And CBI you should have filed a closure report years ago. Shame,” the India Today anchor wrote on X..

Journalist Swati Chadurvedi, addressing Navika Kumar, said she disgraced the free press. “What a hate factory you run @vineetjaintimes defaming a grieving young girl with unholy glee,” she wrote, referring to Times Now MD Vineet Jain. She further said “all these vultures have benefitted immensely from following the agenda of a political party.”

Chaturvedi further criticised the “filthy” content aired by several channels and anchors. “And while you consume this filthy content by Navika Kumar and Arnab Goswami also remember the role of Sameer Wankhede, who foisted a fake drug case on Bollywood actors and sent Shahrukh Khan’s son to jail in an alleged fake drug case. But, this is India. “Kumar, Goswami & Wankhede will pay no price,” Chathurvedi wrote.

Noting the CBI clean chit to actor Rhea, social commentator Kapil alleged that Republic TV chief Arnab and his channel used Rajput’ss suicide as a tool of diversion and elections propaganda against the Maharashtra government, adding that Arnab got TRPs and BJP got power. “You think him as a buffoon, but he is a clever and crook stooge!,” Kapil wrote.

However, there have been several channels that did not fall for the TRP pressure and not being carried away the WhatsApp forwards as breaking news, including then NDTV. Former NDTV Journalist Arvind Gunasekar took to social media to note his respect for several media professionals at NDTV back then for not “joining the circus”

“When the entire 9 pm judges were vilifying Rhea Chakraborty and her family, (old) NDTV stuck to the facts. We were targeted when we reported “investigation reveals no foul play in SSR’s death”. NDTV editors stood firm on our story. (Old) NDTV followed the reporters’ info from the ground.”

Gunasekar, the former senior special correspondent of the New Delhi -based channel, had left NDTV earlier in 2024 after business tycoon Gautam Adani took over the ownership of the media house, allegedly changing its editorial policies.

After the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Bihar Police registered an abetment of suicide case based on a complaint filed in Patna by Rajput’s father, KK Singh. The actor’s family had accused Ms Chakraborty of mentally harassing him, medicating him, exploiting him for money and playing a role in his death. The actress was questioned by the probing agencies during the investigation.

After undertaking the case, the CBI forensically examined the crime scene and a laptop, hard disks, a Canon camera and two mobiles were seized. The central agency finally concluded there was no evidence of any abetment to suicide in the death of the Bollywood actor.
