
Veteran Journalist T.R. Gopalakrishnan Dies at 72
Veteran journalist T.R. Gopalakrishnan died today in Bengaluru. He is survived by his sister, Malathi Ramachandran, and brother, T.R. Ramachandran. His wife, Geetha Srinivasan, predeceased him by 72 days on September 4, 2023.
T.R. Gopalakrishnan was well known for his prolonged career at THE WEEK as editor-in-charge. With 29 years of service (1983-2018), T.R. Gopalakrishnan succeeded in ushering the WEEK magazine to the list of top magazines in India.
Born and raised in Delhi, T.R. Gopalakrishnan started his journalism career in 1974 at Motherland, a daily run by the then Jan Sangh party (now the BJP), as a reporter cum subeditor. Despite having been admitted to engineering at IIT Kanpur, TRG had been following his dream as a journalist.
After a short stint at Motherland, he worked with Hindustan Times before being appointed as the news editor at “This Fortnight.” He then became an assistant editor at Super, a film magazine, and news editor of Current, a tabloid newsweekly in then Bombay (Mumbai). After retiring from THE WEEK, he was working as a consulting editor at Citizen Matters.
