Veteran Journalist-Writer TJS George Dies At 97

Noted journalist and writer TJS George died today at 97. He was hospitalised in Manipal due to old-age related difficulties. “It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of Mr T J S George. With his demise, an extraordinary and golden era of journalism has come to a close. His fearless and uncompromising voice and remarkable contributions will continue to remain a guiding light for generations in the media world. RIP,” said a statement from people associated with the journalist-writer.

Thayil Jacob Sony George Known as TJS George, a titan of Indian journalism, was born in Kerala and began his career in 1950 at the Free Press Journal in Mumbai, later becoming the founding editor of Asiaweek.

His incisive columns, notably “Point of View” in The New Indian Express, ran for 25 years until 2022, tackling corruption, politics, and social issues with unmatched clarity. Some reports said his columns ran for 1,300 weeks and the editor had mentored hundreds of journalists.

George’s fearless writing earned him the Padma Bhushan in 2011 for contributions to literature and education. As an author, George penned acclaimed biographies of Ramanth Goenka, Pothan Joseph, MS Subbulakshmi, Nargis, and Krishna Menon, alongside books on Indian politics and urban histories like Bangalore’s.

“Saddened by the passing of veteran journalist, editor & author T J S George. With his sharp pen and uncompromising voice, he enriched Indian journalism for over six decades. He was a true public intellectual who made readers think, question and engage. My heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and countless admirers,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences.

His wife Ammu George has died this January and he is survived by son Jeet Thayil and Sheba Thayil.
