Mahindra Becomes India’s Number 2 Automaker, With 19% Growth

In February 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra surpassed Hyundai Motor India to become the second-largest passenger car manufacturer, marking a turning point in the history of the Indian automotive industry. Mahindra sold 50,420 cars in the domestic market last month, marking an exceptional 19% year-over-year growth. According to Veejay Nakra, President of M&M Ltd.’s Automotive Division, “We recorded SUV sales of 50,420 in February, a 19% increase, and 83,702 total vehicles, a 15% increase.” Our SUV portfolio’s ongoing upward momentum is the cause of this impressive achievement.

Does this represent a shift in the market that Hyundai should be concerned about, or is it only a passing fad for Mahindra? Two manufacturers that have chosen different routes are the subject of this story. Let’s look at the stats before we go into any of this. As previously stated, Mahindra reported YoY growth of 19%, but its rivals, Hyundai and Tata Motors, reported YoY declines of 4% and 9%, respectively.

Mahindra has launched a number of new SUVs as part of its unrelenting push. The XUV700, the company’s flagship ICE SUV, debuted in 2021, and the Scorpio N followed in 2022. The business debuted the Thar Roxx and 3X0 in 2024, and two electric SUVs, the BE 6 and the 3X0, in 2025.

The BE 6 and XEV 9e earned a record 30,179 bookings on the day, generating Rs 8,472 crores, to give you an indication of how astounding Mahindra’s stats are. The record-breaking sales of Mahindra are turning into a legend. With 25,000 reservations in a minute and 100,000 in just 30 minutes, the Scorpio N astounded in 2022. However, that is nothing compared to the Thar Roxx, which broke all records last year by booking an incredible 176,218 seats in only 60 minutes.

However, because of its continued heavy reliance on the Creta, Hyundai may need to start over. The Hyundai portfolio’s other cars need to boost their sales figures, but the midsize SUV remains the best-selling model in its class. Hyundai reported selling 47,727 units domestically and 11,000 units abroad per month. In February 2025, the Korean manufacturer’s export sales increased 6.8% year over year.
