Discussion around gender equality has always been a heated topic. During a recent interview, Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty, also a renowned author and philanthropist, has shared a piece of her mind on what gender equality meant to her.

In the video which was posted on X, Sudha explains how she thinks men and women are “like two wheels of a bicycle”. “In my view, men and women are equal but in different ways. They complement each other like two wheels of a bicycle; you can’t move forward without the other,” she wrote while sharing the clip.

The video begins with her saying, “What is equality? You should define first”. In the rest of the video explaining more about the statement, she said, “You known both genders are different”.

Sudha Murty explains that women are “wired” differently than men and they are “normally very good at languages”. According to her, women are excellent managers, compassionate and giving. On the other hand, men are different. “Their emotional quotient is not like women. They may have a good IQ (intelligent quotient) but they definitely don’t have a good EQ (Emotional quotient),” she said.

Sudha Murty’s video has garnered more than 5,500 views. People posted varied comments while reacting to her statement on gender equality. Agreeing on Murty’s remark, one user wrote, “Very true. On the same page.” While another wrote, “True. Both face hardships in life. Without both, nature is incomplete”.

Sudha Murthy is the author of several books, mostly for children, and is also known for her contribution to Kannada and English literature. She has been a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Pureskar, the Padma Shri (2006), and the Padma Bhushan (2023).
