Supreme Court Stresses 'Mass Inclusion', Nudges EC Again On SIR In Bihar
The Supreme Court had nudged the Election Commission (EC) again to accept Aadhar Voter ID as proof of citizenship in Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. The SC stresses ‘Mass inclusion’, cautioning against voter exclusions. The Supreme Court was hearing a group of petitions challenging the SIR conducted by the EC in Bihar.
The Court asked the election body why Aadhaar is being excluded when it is accepted across India? Notably, SIR has flagged over 64 lakh bogus voters.
Justice Suryakant and Joymalya Bagchi were hearing the petition and said to hold a final verdict about the SIR conducted by the EC in Bihar. The court said not to give an interim order on SIR regarding elections in Bihar. The bench will hear the petition now at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Supreme Court, in its July 10, 2025, order, has directed the Election Commission to consider Aadhar Card, Voter ID, and Ration Card to consider as proof, and allowed SIR to continue.
The Bench now said that any of the documents enlisted by the ECI could be forged and also questioned the rationale behind excluding Aadhaar card and Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) alone from the list of acceptable documents.
The publication of the draft voter list is currently scheduled for August 1.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday, July 27, 2025, said that 91.69% of voters registered in the 2025 voter list in Bihar have submitted the counting forms.
The ongoing SIR can reportedly deprive over 4.5 crore people of casting their votes after a lack of documentation.
