National Commission for Women (NCW) today took note of a “lewd comment” in social media on Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. The Commission demanded action against the alleged user, Ahmad for transmitting obscene material in electronic form.

Taking  cognizance of the remark, the Commission wrote to the Delhi police asking to arrest the commentator and take appropriate action.

President Droupadi Murmu on July 5, awarded the Kirti Chakra to Captain Anshuman Singh who died after sustaining severe burns while rescuing fellow soldiers and retrieving lifesaving medicines from a fire at a medical investigation centre in an Army camp in Siachen in July 2023. His widow widow wife, Smriti Singh received the award in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Amid netizens pouring comments praising the soldier’s bravery on social media, an X user, Ahamed, claiming to be from Delhi commented on an offensive remark, inviting the wrath of fellow users.

The NCW has citing violations of Section 67 of the Information Technology Act of 2000 and Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, while calling for urgent police action.

In a post on X, the commission said that it has identified a “lewd and derogatory comment” made by Ahmad K. from Delhi on a photo of a Kirt Chakra Captain Anshuman Singh’s widow. “This act violates Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. NCW condemns this behaviour and urges immediate police action. Hon’ble Chairperson Ms Rekha Sharma has sent a letter to Delhi commissioner of Police and DCP Central Delhi to arrest the accused and send A detailed report within 3 days,” the NCW wrote.

Fact-checker, Muhammed Zubair, took note of the change in the alleged profile of the X user. In a comment below the women commission’s post, Zubair wrote, “Here are details of that abusive Troll account. Later changed his profile I’d and location name to ‘Delhi’. Hope @DelhiPolice tracks down such abusive accounts,” and shared the screenshots as proof.
