Canadian Citizenship or 41LPA Indian Job: 26-Year-Old Techie's Dilemma

Working overseas might be the dream of many Indian youngsters, and it has its own pros and cons as well. An Indian software engineer residing in Canada is facing a challenging situation about his career and future, and here is a breakdown by Reddit users and the possible solutions to the issue.

We often feel oscillation in making crucial decisions in life and when it comes to the career, it’s not easy to choose the better one. The 26-year-old tech professional is currently working as a DevOps engineer in Halifax, and now his thoughts are whirling between either accepting a high-paying job offer in Bengaluru or continuing his path to Canadian citizenship. And this attracted traction on Reddit.

The tech guy moved to Canada in 2019 for a Master’s degree and has since earned permanent residency (PR). The software engineer currently earns 85,000 Canadian dollars (around Rs 52.5 lakh annually, including bonuses). However, the high cost of living in Halifax and the strained healthcare system in Canada is the challenging factor.

Due to the heavy living expenses of Canada, this software engineer is paying 2,300 Canadian dollars, which is equivalent to Rs 1.42 lakh for rent and utilities. Moreover, the long waiting times for non-urgent healthcare have been another significant issue.

On the other hand, his company has offered him a managerial position in Bengaluru with a salary of Rs 36 lakh per annum, plus a Rs 5 lakh bonus. But here arises another issue, while the offer seems promising, the engineer is concerned about adjusting himself to the Indian work culture. And Indian managers are his nightmare. Describing his situation he wrote “I’ve never worked in India, and I’ve heard horror stories about the demands of Indian bosses,”

Another factor of consideration is its potential impact on his path to Canadian citizenship. Staying in Canada would allow him to secure citizenship in 1.5 years, but taking the job in India could push that timeline to at least 2.5 years. He also worries about his mother’s health back in India, stating that being closer to home could help her as she deals with growing health concerns.
