Kappen Keeps the Citadel: Independent Powerhouse Mani C Kappen Triumphs in Pala Thriller
Kottayam, Kerala: In a result that solidifies his reputation as a “giant-killer” in central Travancore, incumbent MLA Mani C Kappen has successfully defended his seat in the Pala constituency, emerging victorious in one of the most high-stakes rematches of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.
In a grueling contest that went down to the final rounds of counting, Kappen, contesting as an independent candidate, defeated Kerala Congress (M) chairman Jose K Mani by a margin of 2,991 votes. The victory marks a personal triumph for Kappen and a significant blow to the LDF’s ambitions of reclaiming its lost fortress.
The electoral battle in Pala was characterized by intense rivalry and shifting political dynamics, as Jose K Mani sought to restore his party’s five-decade-old legacy in the region. However, from the initial rounds of counting, Kappen established a steady, albeit narrow, lead that he refused to relinquish.

The final tally released by the Election Commission of India after 16 rounds of counting showed Kappen securing 50,799 votes to Jose K Mani’s 47,808, proving that the incumbent’s personal charisma and local development record resonated more strongly with the electorate than traditional party allegiances.
The 2026 contest also saw a notable performance by the NDA, with Shone George finishing third with 35,304 votes, a factor that many observers believe played a role in the final outcome. As news of the final result broke, jubilant supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF) flooded the streets of Pala town, celebrating what they termed a victory for the “people’s representative” over “political maneuvering.”
