In a bid to meet the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for hosting the Games, the Gujarat government has formed a separate company to get the infrastructure in place. According to an official, INR 6000 crore has been allocated to build six sports complexes to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, if India wins the bid for the quadrennial showpiece event.
The company is named, “Gujarat Olympic Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Ltd.”, was formed three months earlier and an introductory board meeting has already taken place, as per a senior official.
The company is likely to come into light at the Vibrant Gujarat Trade Show 2024 which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in Gandhinagar.
The primary objective of the company will be to look after the development of an area measuring nearly 350 acres around the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad”s Motera area.
“To realise Prime Minister Modi”s dream of hosting the Olympics in the country, we have drawn a master plan to develop the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera and surrounding areas spread across 350 acres. As per the plan submitted by a design firm selected earlier through an open bid, six sports complexes will be constructed in an area of 350 acres,” an official was quoted as saying by PTI.
The principal secretary of the Gujarat urban development and urban housing department serves as the chairperson of the company while the other board of directors include the municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad, director general of Sports Authority of Gujarat and Urban Development Authority CEO.
